Being in the Driver’s Seat of Life 🛣️

Forward: Eyes on the Road

Life is like sitting in the driver’s seat of a car. The road ahead represents your future — the direction that matters most. Proverbs 4:25 says, “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.” Just as taking your eyes off the road can lead to costly consequences, losing focus on God’s path can derail us. Our greatest strength is keeping attention on what we can control: the future God is guiding us toward — fixing our eyes and mind on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

The Side Mirrors: Awareness Without Attachment

The side mirrors show what’s beside and around us — the things we need to be aware of, but not fixate on. Proverbs 27:12 reminds us, “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” Glancing at our surroundings is wise, helping us make informed decisions. But lingering too long on what we cannot control — the actions, opinions, or movements of others — will distract us from the road God has called us to travel.

The Rearview Mirror: Learning from the Past

The rearview mirror shows what’s behind us — our past victories, failures, and experiences. Psalm 103:12 tells us, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Looking back can be helpful for reflection and learning, but staring too long can cause us to crash. God calls us to remember lessons without being trapped by regret, trusting Him to guide each step forward.

Eyes on the Road Ahead

Ultimately, life requires discernment: knowing what to watch, what to learn from, and most importantly, where to focus. Our control is limited, but our faith gives us the power to fix our gaze on Jesus. The road may have curves, blind spots, and unexpected obstacles, but with God as our guide, we can navigate with confidence, hope, and peace. Life is like being in the driver’s seat of a car. We glance at mirrors, check our surroundings, and try to steer every turn — yet ultimately, it’s God who holds the wheel. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Fixing our eyes on Jesus gives clarity and peace, even when the road feels uncertain. As a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW), I blend faith with evidence-based strategies like CBT, solution-focused therapy, and trauma-informed care — walking alongside you as you navigate life’s curves, grow in resilience, and discover God’s guidance and peace in the journey.

A Prayer for the Journey

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for your Holy Spirit and the steady hand on my life’s journey. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on You, not distracted by the uncertainties or temptations around me. Teach me to use my side mirrors wisely — to be aware of my surroundings without becoming attached to what I cannot control.

Lord, may I learn from my past without being held captive by regret, and may my rearview mirror serve as a tool for reflection and growth. Help me to trust Your plans, lean on Your understanding, and submit every step to Your will.

Grant me discernment to focus on the road You have set before me, navigating each turn with faith, courage, and hope. Even when obstacles appear, remind me that You hold the wheel and that Your grace is sufficient for every curve and challenge.

Keep me steadfast in faith, attentive to Your guidance, and filled with peace as I journey forward. May my eyes always remain on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
